Anthrax letters in New York and Washington, DC (2001)

I selected this attack because it was not long ago. Anyway, on September 11 , potent anthrax letters described as "weapons grade" material ( the brown material) mailed from Princeton reached: ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and the New York Post, all located in New York. At least 22 people developed anthrax infection and five died of inhalational anthrax. Then weeks later (September 18, 2001) new letters reached two Democratic U.S. Senators on Washington DC, killing five people and infecting 17 others. The anthrax on these new letters was “weaponized” (fine powder) unlike the first letters. The FBI narrowed its focus, Authorities traveled to six different continents, interviewed over 9,000 people, conducted 67 searches. They expected the Middle East countries to be responsible, but a weaponized material would requiring sophisticated equipment and that was unlikely to have been produced in some "cave”.
In mid-2008, the FBI narrowed its focus to Bruce Edwards Ivins. He was a scientist who worked at the government's biodefense labs at Fort Detrick in Frederick, (Maryland). Ivins had been told about the impending prosecution and died from an overdose of "Tylenol with Codeine," which was considere a suicide (August 1, 2008), and although the FBI now attributes the anthrax attacks to a scientist acting alone, evidence connects the September 11 hijackers to the 2001 anthrax attacks.

  1. Well, actually I didn’t know that much about the anthrax letters that were send to few local networks in New York and the Democratic US Senators in Washington. I’m shock to know that even now days the FBI is not totally sure about the responsible of the letters. It’s sad to see how the U.S has only been adding names to its list of enemies during these past years and to know that the ones who suffer the most are innocents.

Maybe now, the world’s most powerful nation will be leaded to a more pacific, harmonious and non-selfish future; far away from all military conflicts, mortal threats, etc. Or well, at least lest hope and pray for it.

  2. I had already read about the Pearl Harbor attack. Still its creepy the way this Japanese people plan their attack, 2’402 killed and 1’282 wounded, and a lot of airplanes, cruisers and ships sank and damaged, while the Japanese losses were minimal. I can't help think that maybe World War II would have been less bloody if the Pearl Harbor attack hadn't trigger the U.S. in participating =/ , so much for world peace.

  3. I forgot to say what I think about the anthrax letters. It creeps me out even more to think that so much time, effort and technology are used on trying to harm people, and it bothers me the way the U.S. refers to other countries ("caves") just because they were once on top (They are not exactly on their best economic shape now a days).
